TikTok has confirmed plans to create more than 500 new jobs in the UK, as part of a wider expansion of its operations. The announcement comes as the platform reaches 30 million monthly active users in Britain, making it the company’s largest user base in Europe.
The recruitment drive will bring TikTok’s total UK workforce to 3,000 employees by the end of the year. Roles will span multiple areas including operations, trust and safety, engineering, content moderation, and commercial partnerships.
To accommodate its growing team, TikTok will open a second London office in early 2025. The new 135,000 square foot space will be located in the Barbican and will sit alongside its existing headquarters in Farringdon, which opened in 2022.
Adam Presser, director of TikTok UK and global head of operations and trust and safety, said: “Whether through direct investment in jobs and innovation, or the wider economic contribution from millions of British businesses on TikTok, we’re pleased to be increasing our investment and presence here in the UK, an important hub for TikTok.”
Mr Presser emphasised the company’s commitment to platform safety and the wider UK digital economy: “What underpins our continued growth is our deep commitment to safety and to creating an enjoyable and secure digital space to sustainably support creators, entrepreneurs and the wider economy, which is why we also invest significantly in safety.”
TikTok’s expansion comes amid growing debate in the UK about children’s online activity. The government is exploring new measures to limit screen time for young people, including the possibility of curfews, as part of the implementation of the Online Safety Act.
Despite its growth in the UK, TikTok continues to face scrutiny over data protection and transparency. The company was recently fined €530 million (£446 million) by the Irish Data Protection Commission for breaching EU privacy laws concerning the transfer of user data to China. TikTok has stated it will appeal the decision.
The platform, owned by Chinese firm ByteDance, is also under regulatory pressure in other countries, including the United States, where national security concerns have prompted discussions about a potential ban.
Since launching in the UK in 2018, TikTok has steadily increased its investment in the country. The latest hiring plans represent an opportunity for job seekers interested in careers in tech, safety, content, and digital innovation.
The company is expected to publish details of available roles in the coming months as it continues to grow its presence in London and beyond.
