When you're looking for a new job, there are several pieces of advice you'll be given over and over again. It might be 'dress for success', 'follow your passions' or 'keep your CV up to date'.
And all of this is good advice. But it's not quite as simple as that...
With so many people in the workplace, the truth is there is no one-size-fits-all approach to applying for jobs. Every job seeker is unique, with their own unique experience and requirements.
Sometimes it's worth thinking outside the box and approaching the process from a different angle. Here's some advice you may not have heard before...
Don't follow your passions
People who have found a job they love, did not necessarily find it by following a passion. Studies show it's more likely that you will became passionate about a role over time as you get better at it and learn more about the area you're working in. It's a bonus if you can find a job in a field you're already interested in, but if you're working with a good team in an organisation with a healthy culture, you can develop an interest in most things.
Found your dream job? Wait...
If you've found a job online that you like the sound of, your instinct might be to apply straightaway but don't. Spend time researching the company, its employees and its culture. Then you can make sure the application you submit is tailored for that company. You might want to try reaching out to someone who works there who you share connections with for their advice. Anything that might help your application to stand out from the crowd.
Bypass the HR team
If you're applying speculatively then why not go straight to the decision maker? Otherwise you're relying on the HR team to pass it on to the person you want to reach. Alternatively you could try and track down someone else in the manager's team and build a relationship with them before scoping out any opportunities with them ahead of sending in an application.
The perfect job...for right now
If you're looking for your first job, you're currently unemployed, or keen to leave your current job, your next job doesn't have to be the perfect job. Just the right job for now. It can be a great stepping stone into an organisation that you want to work for, or to gain experience that will help you with a move elsewhere. Rather than focusing on the role, focus on the potential.
