Halfords has launched a recruitment drive to try and fill 1,000 technician roles over the next 12 months.

The UK's largest provider of motoring services has announced that its interim profits have halved as customers cut spending because of the cost of living crisis. One part of its business that is doing very well, however, is its motoring loyalty clubs which has seen an influx of new members as drivers look for help to cover the ever-growing cost of running a car.

The surge of new members has created the need for 1,000 new technicians and, to help get around the labour shortage currently faced by many UK industries, Halfords  is targeting more female and retired recruits.

Chief executive Graham Stapleton explained: "We are today launching a recruitment drive to fill 1,000 new automotive technician roles over the next 12 months. In particular, we are hoping to attract retirees back into the workforce, as well as increasing the number of women in technician roles.”

Halfords has more than 600 garages around the UK and almost 700 vans.
