The logistics company DHL has announced it is going to expand in the UK, opening new depots and increasing the size of others which will create a total of 4,000 new jobs.

It is planning to invest £482m in its UK e-commerce business, DHL Parcel UK, in response to a rise of 40% in volumes since the start of 2020, caused by more people doing online shopping during the pandemic.

The ambitious plans include creating 10 new depots across the UK and expanding 20 of its existing sites. This will create 3,500 jobs at the sites.

Almost half of the investment money will go towards building an entirely new 25,000sq m hub south of Coventry airport, designed to handle more than 500,000 items every day, creating 600 jobs ranging from warehouse staff to drivers, administration and management.

DHL is also spending £64m upgrading its fleet which includes buying six electric trucks, 30 liquefied natural gas trucks and 18 electric tugs. Its parent company has announced that it will spend £6bn on sustainable fuel and clean technologies by 2030.
