Research from ServiceNow suggests that the UK job market could see a significant transformation, with 610,000 new roles created by 2028 due to advancements in artificial intelligence (AI).
The study, which used machine learning to analyse data across various sectors, highlights the potential impact of AI on job creation in technology, media, and telecommunications. These sectors are projected to account for 320,000 new jobs by 2029. Additionally, education could gain 190,000 new roles, while healthcare may add 90,000.
However, the report also outlines the negative effects of AI on employment, with certain sectors facing job losses. The retail sector is expected to lose 240,000 jobs by 2028, while manufacturing could see a reduction of 90,000 roles, and financial services may lose 50,000.
Daniel Stirrett, Group Vice President & General Manager for the UK and Ireland at ServiceNow, said: "Like other technologies before it, on one hand AI will disrupt the workforce, and on the other, create a net-positive gain in employment."
Increased Productivity and New Opportunities
ServiceNow’s report also points to productivity gains for existing workers. For example, it estimates that system administrators in the tech sector could save up to 12.6 hours per week due to AI.
The implementation and maintenance of AI technologies are expected to create a further 400,000 roles. Those looking to upskill for future opportunities are encouraged to explore fields such as computer and information systems management, development, and data engineering.
Global Workforce Trends
ServiceNow predicts that, overall, AI will contribute to workforce growth globally, except in countries with ageing populations such as Germany and Japan. The report challenges the perception that AI will replace human workers, instead indicating a shift in job roles and the emergence of new markets.
